...But does it work with The Clapper?

,
Digital billboards deliver advertisements using thousands of tiny lights which must burn at different intensities throughout the course of a day. In broad daylight, the lights are cranked up to about 95% of their capacity, and at night they are dimmed down to about 5% so as not to distract drivers.

Some billboard companies control the brightness of their displays using time tables- specific intensities are assigned to specific times of day. What this doesn't take into account is that the orbit of the earth causes sunrise and sunset to happen at different times throughout the year. Not to mention factors such as cloud cover, rainstorms, etc. Furthermore, highway safety laws require that signage should not increase the level of ambient light in an area by more than a few footcandles.

To ensure that these laws are strictly adhered to, and that advertisers messages are clearly visible at all times of day, Clear Channel Outdoor has invested in dimming probes for each of their digital billboards. Seen below, these sensors are mounted to the top of the display, and measure the changing level of ambient light. The PC inside the board then adjusts the brightness accordingly. Though these devices aren't cheap, they are well worth the investment to make sure advertisers are getting what they pay for.

$20,000 of Free Advertising

In harsh economic times, a little added value can go a long way. As a thank you to their dozens of advertisers in the hospitality and entertainment industries, Clear Channel Outdoor is running a "Welcome to Tampa Bay" message on their Digital Outdoor Network featuring the logos of businesses that stand to benefit from the influx of visitors during Super Bowl week.

Over 100,000 visitors are expected to stream into town for Sunday's big game, and local business owners are poised to cash in. Gaining added exposure on 12 of the highest traffic billboard locations can't hurt either.

The Positive Primate...

Tired of reading about all that is negative in the media recently? For a refreshing dose of positive thinking, check out the little monkey delivering a daily positive news headline or anecdote on digital billboards across Tampa Bay. "Kismet" the monkey has been spreading the good news every day since 2009 began and people are definitely paying attention.

Tampa resident Paige Lorenz noticed the monkey on the digital sign at Dale Mabry & Waters Ave. on her daily commute and sent an email to Clear Channel Outdoor, curious as to what the monkey was advertising. The very next day, the monkey was sporting a wink and the message "Hey Paige, Thanks For The Email!"

Although the messages aren't an advertisement for any service or product, they do display the ability of digital signs to create a dialogue between an advertiser and the community.
